    In today’s museum scene computer games are considered a novelty. It opens up vast opportunities in terms of education as well as in reaching out to new audiences. Thea idea of this new product was to focus on the adventures and the stories of the early 17th century using the advantages of digital media. A serious game seemed a suitable product to implement just that. A cooperation of Historisches Museum Basel, University of Basel, ui/deation GmbH and Co. KG, the GoodEvil.

    Roman cuijk is an 3D environment that anyone can visit as an individual, with friends or as a school class. It has been built accurately to the available archeological record. Besides an impressive, scale built model of a Roman fort and bridge, the environment offers historical information in the form of text and videos, and allows people to test their knowledge of what they have learnt.

    The Sound of the Netherlands is a unique online sound archive that combines historical sounds from the collection of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision with new recordings created by enthusiasts. It uses SoundCloud as a third-party distribution infrastructure and crowdsourcing as a mechanism to complement the collection of Sound and Vision and to stimulate active engagement. The online archive is made available to enable creative reuse, to open up the collection to research and to attract a broader audience interested in cultural heritage. To this end, all sounds are labeled with Creative Commons licenses.

    RESTART is a game played at the Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem (Netherlands) by secondary school students (aged 11 to 14). It allows these young people to experience for themselves what it is like to settle in a country with a strange culture and customs. They learn about the personal motivations that drive migration and what a huge step it is to leave your homeland behind. With an iPad as their guide, and supported by a carefully considered game structure, students make their way around the entire museum park.
